TRADERS PROTEST
AGAINST PARKING CHARGES
Caldicot traders have joined together to form OPPTICAL (Oppose Parking
Payments in Caldicot), an action group to campaign against Monmouthshire
County Council’s proposals to charge for the use of the town’s
car parks. Many of the town centre businesses struggle to survive in the
face of high rents and the loss of trade to larger retail centers in Chepstow
and Newport and rely heavily on the “drop in” trade. It is
feared that this will be severely curtailed by parking charges.
TOWN
TWINNING
A group from Caldicot visited the French town of Molieres as part of the
twinning of the two communities. The group included the mayor of Caldicot,
Councillor Ron Stewart and members of Caldicot’s twinning committee.
They were joined by a contingent from Caldicot school which included headteacher
Susan Gwyer-Roberts, head of languages Jane Curnock and an number of pupils.
The trip coincided with VE Day and during the remembrance service Councillor
Stewart laid a wreath on the Molieres war memorial.
25 YEARS
OF HELP AND ADVICE
Caldicot Citizens Advice Bureau has celebrated its 25th anniversary. The
local CAB was set up in 1980 at a time when the town faced huge problems
caused by the run down of the steel industry.
