SHAKE-UP
THREATENS CALDICOT SCHOOLS
Monmouthshire County Council has announced plans for a major reorganisation
of primary schooling in Caldicot. One proposal is to close West End Infants
School and Sandy Lane Infant Schools while rebuilding Green Lane and extending
St Mary’s. Under this plan, Ysgol Y Ffin, the Welsh School at Sudbrook,
would move to Sandy Lane. The move is prompted by the fact that there
are 367 surplus places in the primary schools in the Caldicot area. Consultation
meetings are planned and all local primary schools.
SCHOOL FIELD
SELL-OFF OPPOSED
A petition opposing the sale of a large part of the playing field of Caldicot
Comprehensive School for a supermarket has been handed to the Severnside
Area Committee of Monmouthshire County Council. The petition, which contains
over 1,000 signatures, was presented by Mrs Jill Bond, from Caldicot Regeneration
Group. The meeting revealed that local councillors are divided on the
issue. Councillor David Ashwin and Councillor Mike Smith support the sale
of the land, while Councillor Olive Evans and Councillor Bill Edwards
oppose it.
SUICIDE VERDICT
The coroner at the inquest on Caldicot archaeologist Derek Upton (see
September and November 2005) passed a verdict of suicide. He concluded
that Mr Upton took his own life while “suffering some kind of Depression”.
