Peter Martin from Newport, spoke about his experiences during twenty five years of rescuing swans. We were amused by pictures of swans sitting in the passenger seat of his car, looking very smug in their carrier bags. Peter described the difficulty of catching a swan, especially one beside the muddy reaches of the Usk at Newport. We also heard of the hazards faced by swans in the form of overhead cables, angler's hooks, lines and sinkers (lead) and aggression from other territorial swans. Many swans had reason to be grateful to their human friends, especially those that like biscuits!
